The Animal Control Department conducts its operations from the Richard Murray Animal Shelter at 6363 French’s Mill Road in Guilderland Center. The Animal Shelter was fully renovated and upgraded in 2006, utilizing a combination of Town funds and private-sector donations,  including 400 tiles purchased by area supporters that grace its walls.

Animal Control Department employees spend much of their time on the road throughout the Town carrying out their duties. During 2007, they:

 -Responded to 972 calls
-Dealt with 16 animal bite reports
-Removed 68 dead animals from roads throughout the Town
-Reunited 47 lost or runaway pets with their owners
-Placed 9 dogs in permanent adoptive homes
-Placed 15 cats in permanent adoptive homes

Animal Shelter Cages.jpgThe Richard Murray Animal Shelter is normally open to the public from 10:00 A.M.- 3:30 P.M. on Monday through Friday. Occasionally, emergency calls will require staff to be in other locations during those hours.192008_22708_0.jpg

If you are interested in adopting a pet, you are encouraged to contact Animal Control Director Rich Savage at the shelter (phone 861-6855) to discuss the steps involved. Our commitment to finding homes for orphaned animals includes both an interview and a home visit to insure placement with qualified and loving families.

Animal Shelter Intake - The Richard Murray Animal Shelter operated by the Town of Guilderland will accept dogs and cats currently owned by Guilderland residents for adoption placement. Animals coming into the shelter for adoption must be: generally healthy domestic dogs and cats at least six months old; spayed or neutered; up-to-date on rabies, feline leukemia, and distemper shots; and people-friendly and socialized. Dogs must be currently licensed in the Town of Guilderland.

The shelter does not accept animals that owners are unwilling to keep due to age or poor health, nor does it take pregnant or stray animals or feral cats. Guilderland Animal Control staff will work with owners to locate rescue groups that can deal with animals that the shelter cannot accept. Due to space limitations, the shelter has a maximum capacity of nine dogs and five cats at any point in time.

Photos and information about cats and dogs that are ready for adoption is posted on the Animal Control page of the Town website, www.townofguilderland.org. People interested in adopting a pet from the shelter can inquire at 861-6855 or by visiting the shelter during its regular public hours.
