Guilderland’s Community Environment Department was created in 2007 to manage the gardens at all Town facilities, to coordinate activities at the Guilderland Community Gardens, and to maintain the newly-created trail system in Tawasentha Park, the Winter Recreation Area, and the Community Gardens Area.
Staffed by one year-round employee, plus summer and part-time helpers, the Community Environment staff plants and maintains Guilderland’s well-known Lawlor Memorial Garden, where the staff is shown, as well as other garden areas throughout the Town. The staff recently added a “Children’s Garden” in the area of Tawasentha Park that is in daily use by summer campers. This garden will feature plantings that will appeal to the young campers.
Community Environment staff will also be involved in maintaining and improving the new 4.7 mile trail system in that includes sections in Tawasentha Park, the Winter Recreation Area, and the Community Gardens Area. They will be removing vines and trimming back brush along the trails to provide a more pleasant experience for walkers. Coordination of the activities at Guilderland Community Gardens is also handled by the Community
Environment Department.
