Service Description
The Department of Fire Prevention and Inspection is located on the second floor of Town Hall, McCormick’s Corners, Guilderland, NY. Currently, the department consists of one full-time Chief Fire Inspector, two full-time Deputy Fire Inspectors, one part-time Deputy Fire Inspector and one full-time office assistant. Fire Prevention Staff members are certified as Code Enforcement Officials and employment is limited to those on an Albany County Civil Service list.
The primary mission of the department is to enforce the NYS Uniform Fire Code and Town of Guilderland codes. Secondary to code enforcement through routine commercial and residential fire inspections, the fire inspectors educate the public on Fire and Public Safety Issues. Finally, staff members may be seen assisting the town fire departments on the scene of emergency calls.
Within the Fire Prevention Department contains the Fire Investigation Bureau. The Fire Investigation Bureau is charged with assisting the Town’s fire chiefs in determining the cause and origin of all reported fires in the town. The Bureau contains members of the Fire Department, Guilderland Police Department and the town’s fire departments. Fire Investigators are all certified by New York State in determining the cause (what starts a fire) and the origin (starting point) of a fire.
In addition to enforcing the codes, conducting approximately 900 routine fire inspections annually, public education, assisting town fire departments, serving in the fire investigation bureau, the department also issues town burning permits pursuant to applicable laws, conducts fireplace inspections and inspects newly constructed houses.
