Animal Shelter Intake

The Richard Murray Animal Shelter operated by the Town of Guilderland will accept dogs and cats currently owned by Guilderland residents for adoption placement. Animals coming into the shelter for adoption must be generally healthy domestic dogs and cats at least six months old; spayed or neutered; up-to-date on rabies, feline leukemia, and distemper shots; and people-friendly and socialized. Dogs must be currently licensed in the Town of Guilderland.

The shelter does not accept animals that owners are unwilling to keep due to age or poor health, nor does it take pregnant or stray cats. The shelter will pick up stray dogs within our township. Guilderland Animal Control staff will work with owners to locate rescue groups that can deal with animals that the shelter cannot accept. Due to space limitations, the shelter has a maximum capacity of eight dogs and five cats at any point in time.

Photos and information about cats and dogs that are ready for adoption are posted on the Animal Control page of the Town website. People interested in adopting a pet from the shelter can inquire at 861-6855 or by visiting the shelter during its regular public hours.
