The Department of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) provides pre-hospital medical care to the sick and injured in the Town of Guilderland and Knox. The system deploys a two tiered response to every call by a private ambulance company and Town paramedics. Ambulance company’s emergency medical technicians provide Basic Life Support (BLS). The EMS Department’s NYS certified paramedics provide Advanced Life Support (ALS) which consists of invasive techniques such as IV therapy, tracheal intubation, administration of medications, ekg monitoring and transmission, medical control privileges and more. The Town’s paramedics respond to 911 emergencies, fire standbys, hazardous conditions and many other requests in specially equipped ALS vehicles.
Paramedics must graduate from a college program that consists of training and certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, PreHospital Trauma Life Support, Advanced Medical Life Support and must continue this training. The program is overseen by the Town’s Medical Director, a physician Board-certified in Emergency Medical Services, who responds to high acuity events and provides additional support and medical direction.
