Biography:

Peter G. Barber was elected Town Supervisor and started in December 2015.   Prior to serving as Town Supervisor, Peter was Chairman of the Zoning Board of Appeals for 16 years.  He was also a member of the Zoning Review Advisory Committee and the Comprehensive Plan Committee. 

Peter was born in Guilderland, attended Guilderland schools and graduated from GHS in 1979.  He holds a B.A in Mathematics from UAlbany and Juris Doctorate from Albany Law School and is an attorney admitted to practice law in New York

After graduation, Peter was a clerk to the Hon. Con. G. Cholakis, U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York, and a trial attorney for the United States Department of Justice, Civil Division, Commercial Litigation Branch in Washington, D.C. where he represented NASA and other federal agencies in contract litigation and national security issue in trials and appeals.  He later founded Murphy, Burns, Barber & Murphy, LLP, a Guilderland law firm specializing in municipal defense, representing police officers and government officials, and handling planning, zoning and development matters.    

Peter and his wife Cathy, a violinist and attorney from New Mexico, met while they were DOJ trial attorneys, and were married in Washington.  After the birth of their daughter, they moved to Guilderland where they raised their children Elizabeth and Gregory who both graduated from GHS and now work as journalists.
